Regulations for transporting auction lots in France: what every auction house should know

Complete guide on regulations for transporting auction lots in France: packaging, insurance, customs, legal obligations of auction houses.

Transporting auction lots is governed by a more complex regulation than it appears. Between packaging obligations, insurance rules, customs constraints for international shipments and specific responsibilities of auction houses, it's better to be well informed before shipping. This guide covers everything you need to know in 2026.

The legal framework for parcel transport in France

In France, freight transport is governed by the Commercial Code and the Montreal Convention for international shipments. For auction houses, the status of professional shipper applies, with specific obligations regarding declaration, packaging and insurance.

Packaging obligations for auction lots

General packaging rules

  • Use double-flute cardboard boxes for heavy or fragile items
  • Pad the interior with at least 5 cm of cushioning material on each side
  • Do not reuse previously used boxes whose integrity is compromised
  • Tape the parcel with reinforced adhesive tape on all edges
  • Affix the shipping label on the main side, clearly visible
Important: Liability depends on the cause of damage. If packaging was insufficient, the shipper (auction house) is responsible. If damage is due to rough handling with adequate packaging, the carrier is at fault.

Insurance for auction lots during transport

Carrier's basic liability

In France, carrier liability is limited by default. Standard caps for a 10 kg parcel may be limited to a few tens of euros — very insufficient for a painting or silverware.

Additional insurance options

  • Carrier insurance (base): limited ceiling (~€14/kg), included
  • Declared value option: declared value, 0.5-1% of value
  • Ad valorem insurance: actual value of item, 0.3-0.8%
  • All-risk art insurance: replacement value, 0.5-1.5%

Customs regulations for shipments outside the European Union

When an auction lot is shipped outside the European Union, customs formalities apply. Visit the French Customs website.
